UNICEF Myanmar Children's Cyclone Appeal 2008

Saving lives, Rebulidng futures

More than two months have passed since Cyclone Nargis swept through Myanmar on 2 and 3 May, destroying lives, families and livelihoods in one of South East Asia’s poorest nations.

An estimated 140,400 men, women and children have died or remain missing. Some children who survived the violent storm have lost parents, siblings, teachers and doctors. Most have lost homes and schools. Almost all have lost their entire way of life.

With an established presence in Myanmar of more than fifty years, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) was in a position to respond quickly to their needs with life-saving supplies and services. People have been kept alive and healthy. Families have been reunited. Temporary schools and health centres are being established.

Our work however is far from over. More needs to be done to rebuild homes and schools, restore dreams and translate hope into reality.

UNICEF needs your help to make this possible for children. Join us to make each new day one of renewal and hope for children and their families. Please donate generously to the “Myanmar Children’s Cyclone Appeal”.

UNICEF and Emergencies

UNICEF is both an emergency relief and a long-term development agency. We were founded in the wake of World War II to provide relief and renewal for children in Europe.

Now operating in more than 150 countries and territories worldwide, UNICEF responds to natural disasters based on what we know is needed for children’s healthy development over the long run, as well as what is urgently needed in times of crisis.
